Mountain Bike Racing with the Ballyhoura Screamer

County Limerick's newest bike rental company, Cross Country Trails (www.xct1.com) this week launched the ‘Ballyhoura Screamer’ in association with Ballyhoura Fáilte, the Dino Café and Coilte.

The ‘Ballyhoura Screamer’ is a two stage mountain bike race that will take place on Halloween, Saturday October 31st.
The race will take place on the world class Ballyhoura single track trails within the Ballyhoura Forest across counties Limerick and Cork.
Stage one, a day stage race will offer a tough 30 km circuit to test any mountain biker while the night stage will bring riders through an altogether different forest enclosed by the dark of Halloween night and by the ghastly ghouls, grisly gremlins, devilish demons and creatures of the night from this world and the next.

The advice from the organizers to mountain bikers is do not dare to come alone but bring plenty of support from family and friends.
Chris o’ Callaghan of XCT1 advised that ’you may need support, the race will be very scary and family and friends will have plenty to keep them entertained otherwise with a programme of events that includes twilight haunted trail walks, a costume competition, Halloween games along with decorations, eerie events, hair-raising face painting and oodles of tricks and treats.

For mountain bike enthusiasts and more leisurely visitors the night stage promises to be a great spectator event.
Riders with night lights strapped to their helmets will set off at speed every 30 seconds to tackle the 10 km stage surrounded by a big race carnival atmosphere.

The Ballyhoura Screamer is part of a range of Halloween activities taking place at the Coillte Forest, Ardpatrick, County Limerick during the first ever ‘Ballyhoura Spook’ festival that offers a full family Halloween day out with a host of festivities, fancy dress, traditional Irish Halloween games, story telling and face painting.

The overall winner will have to complete both races but Chris O Callaghan of XCT1 ‘invites everyone with come and try out a stage as it will be possible to race just the day stage on its own if persons do not feel up for the forest on Halloween night’.

Full race details will be made available on ballyhouracountry.com, xct1.com, ballyhouramtb.com and coillteoutdoors.ie.

Birthday Celebrations.

Alice O'Malley of Barrack Street, Kilfinane celebrated her 92nd birthday with her friends and the Active Retirement Group at Molly Blooms Restuarant. Well done Alice!

Congratulations to Mr. Patrick O'Shaughnessy Esq. of Pat & Nora O'Shaughnessy's Drinking Emporium & Fine Wines Distribution Company, O'Connell Street, Kilfinane who celebrated the Somethingth Anniversary of His Birthday on Sunday, September 27th at approximately twenty five and a half minutes past five Post Meridian

In keeping with an age-old tradition, Pat, who looked splendiferously regal in his exquisitely tailored 'I love Pat' t-shirt treated friends and family to the theroretical possibility of a sumptous meal and free
beverages for the duration of the celebrations.
For the doubtful he had considerately hired a troubadour group of wayward fairies who had between them and for the the promise of a look-in-the-door agreed to espouse his beliefs.

In a congenial atmosphere Mr. Pat spared no expense or consideration in providing his many guests with all sorts of entertainment. and hospitality.
Always the Sportsman, He had laid on; soccer and golf, ladies football, rugby and strife; with just enough winners and losers on any side to provide balance and cause for the games' continuance and our own deliverance.
After all the sports were dusted and Dunne there were the sounds of an eclectic wardrobe of music provided by Pat's favourite band, 'Jukebox', and, for intermission He sang such a powerful rendition of his own favourite tune 'Hi Hi Hi, Cwmere Ai Wantchaaa' that the valleys of Wales would have but not thought themselves mere rivulets with not yet broken voices.

Later in the evening the good man regaled his well-wishers with accounts of derring-do and near legendary tales of His own powerful prowess at the game of golf.
No birdies, no eagles, but a well-feathered story of 'par', par excellance!

These stories
were
delivered,
with
verve and panache,
in
a fashion reminiscent,
of
story-telling,
in
this nation's traditions,
by
yore
and
days long since passed
to
the annals and shelves
on
history's cupboards.

It seems yet brilliant that this stalwart champion of the drinking classes and fighting masses has been Himself wrestling a long and painful battle with that most dreadful of conditions, Recession.
In an effort to combat this terrible affliction but also in a way not generally understood by those of lesser mind He has prescribed for Himself the best course of remedial treatment and so will play yet more golf and giddy-up faster with the Gee Gees.

The community wishes him every success in his continuing struggle.
We look forward to many more such wonderful birthdays for, and acts of selfless generosity from the gentleman affectionately known as 'Shanger'.
The One who we say with full conviction is well on His way through Nirvanic Inflection and Golfer's Perfection to that perfectly roundy 'Hole!, in 1!'

South Junior "A" Hurling Championship Final

Blackrock V Effin
Sunday, September 13th. Ballyagran, Co. Limerick.

The
South Junior "A" Hurling Championship Final took place in Ballyagran last Sunday under perfect conditions.  There was a large crowd in attendance and the late Autumn sunshine contributed to an enjoyable sporting event.

Effin were first to open their account with some well taken points.  Later in the first half Blackrock might have thought themselves a little unlucky
to concede a 'soft' goal as a high ball lobbed in from distance found it's way to the back of the net.  Late in the second half Effin must have believed victory was theirs as they pulled four points clear but Blackrock had that 'never say die attitude' and while some of the supporters were leaving in the dying moments the 'Rock scored a point and immediately followed up with a goal.  This drew the teams level at 1 - 16 for Blackrock to Effin's 3 - 10.  The referee's whistle soon followed and the game ended in a draw.

The replay will take place on next Sunday, September 20th in Ballyagran and is sure to attract an even bigger crowd.  Hopefully conditions will be just as good for the match.

Kilfinane Forest F.C. U 16s

On Saturday last we got out league campaign off to a start when we travelled to St. David’s in Cullen forour eagerly awaited first match of the season.
A massive squad of 18 players travelled in anticipation to Cullen to represent Kilfinane in what was our first underage soccer fixture in years.

Forest started the game well and created some good chances with some good passing, but failed to punish St. David’s by putting the ball in the net.
Just before half time St. David’s got a freekick outside our penalty area and with a wicked deflection off the wall, the ball nestled in the bottom corner of the goals.
Against the run of play we found ourselves 1 down at half time.
Early in the second half StDavid’s struck again to put them 2 up, but Forestkept going and almost equalised with Neil Hennessy unluckily shooting wide anda free kick from Ian O’Brien hitting the cross bar.Forest were awarded a penalty in the last ten minutes and up stepped Ian O’Brien to pull one back for Forest, but St. David’s held on for the 3 points.
This was a good performance by Forest as lots of players were playing together for the
first time, well done and keep it up.

Team: Joel Slattery, John Carroll, Paddy Hennessy, Billy Kiely, Darryl Crotty, Adrian Cooke, Diarmuid Lawlor, Ian O’Brien, Alan McCarthy, Shane Shanahan, Neil Hennessy.

Kilfinane Forest F.C.

After engaging in four well contested pre-season games I figured we were after getting a good work-out before we got down to business in the league.

We have made some very positive signings especially witht he addition of Sean Tobin from Ballylanders.
His pre-season games with the Forest would really gey you excited showing his speed, skills an his ability to attack and defend this season.
We also have the hands of Ger O'Brien at the helmagain at the glorious age of 49 and playing as well as ever.

The Forest opened the season with a home game against Castle Rovers who were going to be tough opposition but we had to start well to prove a point to ourselves and the rest of the league.
The Forest started well opening the scoring with a fine strike by Mark Lyons. 1 - 0 to the Forest.
We sat back a bit in the second half and were soon to be punished for our slow
approach to the game as Castle Rovers got their just rewards with a beautiful strike to level the game at 1 - 1.
With 15 minutes remaining manager Tommy Carroll made substitutions that were going to be vital to the outcome of the game with the introuction of Vincent O'Donnell and Paudie Leahy.
This seemed to be a turning point in the game.
With some great passages of play from the Forest we were growing in confidence. The breakthrough came with 5 minutes remaining on the clock. A beautiful ball from Quane to the oncoming Paudie Leahy who struck sweetly from 20 yards to rattle the Rovers net. 2 - 1 to the Forest and all 3 points in the bag. Well done Lads!

Team: G. O'Brien, J. Dawson, E. Carroll, D. Dawson, T.O'Dea, S. Tobin, J. Brazzill, T. Coughlan, B. Quane, M. Lyons. G. Quane.
Subs. V. O'Donnell (Used), Paudie Leahy (Used), D. Flaherty, D. Magner, P. Kelly, T. Carroll.

The Forest's second game was away to Kennedy Pary last Saturday vening and this proved to be a very hard game.
We started well with Tobin and Leahy causing havoc or the Park defence but against the run of play we went down 1 -0 and soon after in the second half were to go down 2 - 0.
If the Forest had had bit of character as they showed in the pre-season now was the time to prove it and that they did with Coughlan popping up with a geat header putting us back in the game 2 - 1.
Soon after we got a second from a great free kick
2 -2. But soon after the referee gave adesperate decesion and awarded the Park penalty and they obliged, 3 - 2 to the Park.
With about 20 minutes left to play Forest were awarded another free ick about 19 yards out and with a beautiful strike 3 - 3. We should really have wrapped up the game in the end but luckily enough we came home with a point.
Great performance again
with the 10 men of the Forest for the last 15. Well done lads.

Team: G. O'Brien, J. Dawson, E. Carroll, D. Dawson, T.O'Dea, S. Tobin, J. Brazzill, T. Coughlan, B. Quane, P. Leahy. G. Quane.
Subs. J. Slattery (Used), T. Carroll.

The Kilfinane Forest Senior Club would also like to wish the best of luck to the Kilfinane Forest Juvenilles Club on their formation and their league competitions.
